Pastor's Letter

July-August -- 2017

Dear Family

If you Google Barbara Brown Taylor, these are some of the words used to describe her:

“Barbara Brown Taylor is a New York Times best-selling author, college professor and Episcopal priest and one of the United States best known preachers.... In 1996 she was named one of the twelve most effective preachers in the English speaking world by Baylor University.... In 2014 Time magazine placed her in its annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world....”

Barbara served as Rector of Grace Calvary Episcopal church in Clarkesville, Georgia and then moved from parish ministry into full -time teaching. For the last 20 years she has been Butman professor of Religion at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia and was also an adjunct professor of Christian Spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.

A recipient of nine honorary doctorates, an author of 13 books, with the last one titled “Learning to Walk in the Dark” featured on the cover of Time magazine, Barbara is in high demand country-wide to teach and to preach. Having been a guest speaker at Duke, Princeton, Emory, Yale, to name a few, as well as a guest on Super Bowl Sunday with Oprah Winfrey, Barbara is coming to Sunriver Christian Fellowship on October 7, 2017!

Barbara will speak from 12-1:30 at Holy Trinity, she will offer Q and A from 1:302:30 and then sign books in the dining room from 2:30-3:30. We will offer some of her books for sale after worship in August for those of you who are interested in purchasing them.

To the parish family, I invite you to come hear Barbara in person, a rare opportunity in such a small setting. But, you must sign up to get your free ticket. After July 16, 2017, we will offer tickets at $35 each, to the general public through the ELCA email network and the EDEO Connections network. We are sure every seat not spoken for by our members will be sold. There will be no “standing room only” as public safety is a top priority, but we will be filled!!

I have crossed this country many times to study at the feet of Barbara in my “continuing education opportunities.” I am fed every time and leave her presence with my cup overflowing.

I will be hugely privileged and honored to introduce her to you on October 7. I hope you will sign up and come.

Faithfully,

               Nancy
